Sal! May you please make a video on how to do clean installation? I’m struggling with keeping my install clean and always have thin set in the grout lines, on my hands, on my pants on my t-shirts.
Sal! May you please make a video on how to do clean installation? I’m struggling with keeping my install clean and always have thin set in the grout lines, on my hands, on my pants on my t-shirts.
I would hire Sal in a minute! To know that the work will be done right the first time is peace of mind.
Thanks for watching my video.
I would check that the tub is level or at least a 1/4” or less. If its more than a 1/4” I wouldn’t move forward until its fixed. Otherwise the water could pool in the corner.
Depends on which side is out of level, low end at the drain will still drain.
@@SalDiBlasi I meant on top and around the edges of the tub. They have a slight slope to them and some are less than others.
I dread doing this. Not easy at all
😊👍
No kerdi band to seal the perimeter of the ceilings & walls???
You sounded somewhat surprised that the tub was level. It must be the homeowner himself who installed it :-)
😊👍
And why is the board "has to" sit on the lip?
So it doesn't get wet, ideally it should be behind the upstand..
Good, fast, and cheap. Pick two
Nothing is cheap these days, not even the hacks.
Sal! May you please make a video on how to do clean installation? I’m struggling with keeping my install clean and always have thin set in the grout lines, on my hands, on my pants on my t-shirts.
Thank you sal. 👍👍
You bet
My takeaway from this is that I want my first tile job to be a small room with square walls.
Wow!!! Beautiful job.
Great video. Thank you sir. God bless.
I mostly use foam pans nowadays, but onetime i had to pour a pan and the customer was adamant that i was doing it wrong because they didn't understand how "sand" was gonna work and become a shower pan. They were losing their minds and tried to kick me off the job. I live and work in Vermont. There's so many yuppy dopes that think they know everything and act all fancy because they have money. They wouldn't know a good job if slapped em in the face. So. Sick. Of. It.
Sometimes customers can be very difficult, fortunately I tend to know more than they do and point to a standard that will put them at ease.
@@SalDiBlasi thanks for taking the time, man. It means a lot. I love you and Issac, and even Starr. I've actually learned a couple useful things from him. I absolutely do not subscribe to his tile philosophy, but hes definitely not a dumb dude. Anyway, thank you for getting back. If you ever come to Vermont, look me up. I could hook you up with hotels, local vendors, whatever. Thank you.
Dude. Fucking right. I got a GED when I was 14 and started doing this. Family business, kind of. Anyway, I've also been there and done that. When I finally realized that I was being forced to hack things in, and my name was on it when push came to shove, they called me slow and said I wasn't doing it right. Well, guess what. Dont care. I'd rather do things "slow" and right, or at least as right as I'm aware of, than do things I know to be wrong and hacky. Knock on wood, I've never had a problem with a single thing I did in those days. Now that I'm 40 and on my own, I take my time and get paid. Not big, but paid. And I get my piece of mind knowing everything is done correctly from top to bottom. Theres not gonna be any water damage, no leaks or broken tile, and no one is gonna get sick because of mold. At least not from my end. Fuck you coming at me with that slow shit. I'm good, homie.
Yes, get paid for the time you need to do it right, let the hacks rush and then you can come and do it over the right way.
@@SalDiBlasi I know, man. It's just hard when there's so many of em. When I tell the customer its gonna be about 15000 for this shower and bathroom, people freak out and say no because they have a guy that will do the whole thing for, like, less than 5000. I hate to lose jobs. But I'm not budging or hacking things in.

Sal, I'm wondering a thing. Grout floats. On your site there are two. Ox Tools Super Soft Stone Grout float and Troxell Urethane Grout float. What I'm wondering is why a person wants a grout float having a different stiffness. I ran into advice for grouting rough surfaces to use a soft to very soft float. And somewhere in Laticrete on Spectralock 1 they say to use a firm float (or a medium stiff). And then there are differing float materials... two layer, and on. Maybe all that is a big topic. Primarily I'm wondering why Laticrete is recommending a firm (or medium) float for Spectralock 1. What aspect of installation would be advantaged? I don't believe you used a firm or med float in your Spectralock video. Mike
Depending on how stiff the grout is, the correct float will make it easy to spread and then squeegee off.
@@SalDiBlasi Thank you. In your experience, what float(s) do you use for Spectralock 1?
Remember my tag line over at John Bridge's forums? I offer 3 things to each customer-- price, quality, and service. But you only get two of the three.
Not doing anything for cheap these days, good or bad, fast or slow.
@@SalDiBlasi I heard that. You know the experience I have, and any customer is going to pay for that experience. They'll get their money's worth, too!
Just what I needed to hear
😊👍
Fast / Cheap / Good - you can only pick 2. Can get tough on yourself when you rewind your speed of your 20s. But man, imagine all the stuff you'd walk away from then knowing what you know now. I wouldn't care too much bout the boys sitting on the couch. They can knit pick while they're tools rust. Quick to get a job done to wait and pray for the phone to ring.
At some point with a large trowel the cement squeezes up between the tiles making it impossible to grout, which could be a worse problem that lesser coverage. How do you deal with that?
Sal you're the best I totally understand what you're saying there is no reason to rush I believe quality is more important than quantity keep up the good work
I appreciate that!
Yep! I prefer to take more time to do it really right. I want it to be solid and last a long time. Lots to learn still but your videos have been very helpful. Thanks!
Exactly
Thanks for watching my video.
Sal’s videos have helped me level up in the trade over the last few years. I been in the trade since 98 but had quite some down time during the 2010’s. When I got back in the field a few years ago a lot of things changed and these videos with the tips and tutorials helped me get back to where I was then vastly improve my craft. My most recent tip I learned from his channel was just a simple one, it was to put a rag on the tile on my Rubi bridge saw to keep the water from running everywhere. Thanks again for your time and dedication to helping others learn and passing tips you have learned from many years in the trade.
Glad that my videos had some value to you. Thanks😊👍
Well said Sal. That’s experience talking.
